Metric Tonight @ The Wiltern

blogpost03

I can’t really remember how Metric came into my life. I think it was something like my ex-boyfriend liked them because his friend had introduced them to him, but BAM, one day I didn’t know them and the next day they were my favorite band. It was obvious. They were upbeat, with strong drums, a batch of synths, and so much fun. Emily Haines, lead singer extraordinaire, was clever, beautiful, and energetic. The perfect combination for an enigmatic focus for a band. The drummer, guitarist, and bassist, a trio of J’s: Joules Scott-Key, James Shaw, Josh Winstead are equally brilliant, with Shaw producing the band’s last two albums.

The upcoming concert, this coming Monday, June 8th, at the Wiltern is sure to be amazing. Metric does not know how to put on a great show. Haines does not know how to keep your eyes off her. Back when they only had one EP and an album to their name (compared to three albums and an EP now), they used to play at the El Rey (before that, they used to play at Spaceland) and those shows were very memorable. Always packed, the fans were highly appreciative of the energy that the band put into the concert.

Haines is an entertainer of the best kind: truly blessed with talent without being a snob about it. She would wear Beatle boots and short skirts, kicking high and showing the audience her underwear. She was like a less insane Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Once, at the end of a song, the band kept repeating the refrain, and Haines gave something like a lecture about John Lennon and the downward trend of the American people to an enraptured crowd. After getting bumped up to The Henry Fonda Theater two years ago, Haines thanked all the fans that have been with them through the long haul.

I cannot wait to hear the songs from the album they released in April, Fantasies. I’m sure they will perform flawlessly, and the high tension songs should really get the Wiltern rocking. Go! Go before they go back to Canada!
